Yemen, officially known as the Republic of Yemen is an Arab country located in Southwest Asia. It is bordered by Saudi Arabia to the north, the Red Sea to the west, the Gulf of Aden and Arabian Sea to the south, and Oman to the east.
Sana’a is the capital and the largest city of Yemen.
Christmas Celebrations in Yemen :
Yemen is an Islamic country. 99% of Yemenis are Muslims.
There are also approximately 5,000 Christians, few hundred Jews and a tiny minority of Hindus in Yemen.
Just like in Bahrain, in Yemen also, the constitution mentions religious liberty but according to human rights activist, Abdul Razzaq al-Azazi, “Christians in Yemen cannot practice their religion nor can they go to church freely.”
There are four churches in Yemen namely -
- Mary Help of Christians Church, Sana’a
- Saint Francis Church, Aden
- Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, Hodeidah
- Saint Theresa of the Child Jesus Church, Taiz
Christmas is a less fan-fare event in Yemen. In the capital city, you find decorated Christmas trees put up at some shopping centers and cafes.
One such place is Sana’a Coffee Corner where there have a complete Christmas holiday atmosphere by having a decorated Christmas tree for display and also play traditional Christmas music and carols.
