Christmas is a civil holiday in many countries of the world and is today celebrated by an increasing number of non-Christians also. Apart from few countries like North Korea, Afghanistan and some hard core Muslim countries in the Middle East, Christmas is celebrated in most of the countries worldwide.

Popular Christmas customs include church celebrations, a special meal, exchanging gifts or Christmas cards, Christmas music and caroling, decorating homes and surroundings with Christmas trees, lights, Christmas ornaments, nativity scenes, garlands, wreaths, mistletoe and holly.

For ardent followers of Jesus, Christmas is a season for pilgrimage. To make long and tiresome journeys to shrines or the sacred city Bethlehem, located in Palestine, Jerusalem that is believed to be the birthplace of Jesus according to the New Testament Gospels of Luke and Matthew.

Christmas is also a special occasion for children as they fantasize Santa Claus traveling a long journey carrying fancy gifts for them.

Because gift-giving and many other aspects of the Christmas festival involve heightened economic activity among both Christians and non-Christians, the holiday has become a significant event and a key sales period for retailers and businesses.

Christmas is also considered to be the best time for a vacation. As New Year follows the festivity, people plan for long rejuvenating vacation making the occasion a memorable one.

Christmas time is one of the most important periods on the Christian calendar, and is often closely connected to other holidays at this time of year, such as Advent, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, St. Nicholas Day, St. Stephen’s Day, New Year’s, and the Feast of the Epiphany.
